Well, I'm glad you asked, because I can exclusively reveal (exclusive if you don't follow the wiki link that is) that Baumkuchen is a kind of layered cake, and is a traditional dessert in many countries throughout Europe and is also a popular snack and dessert in Japan. The cake has a ringed appearance when sliced, which resembles tree rings, and gives the cake its German name, Baumkuchen, which literally translates to "tree cake" or "log cake" [subbed by zippa].
