anyone know how to win the snail race?

after the kid takes the gum go back to the alley and street. I can't remember what I did, probably clicked around like a crazy person but when you go back to the kid he's chewed the gum and it's next to him on the step. You can click it and then combine it with a couple things.

I have combined a couple things with the coin but I still keep losing the race. how do u make the snail faster?
