Destination Death
Destination Death is an educational point'n'click game from The BBC in which you are supposed to be learning French, German and/or Spanish as you play (as far as I can tell, other than the language obviously, the game seems to be the same no matter which language you pick). I choose to play in French and have worked out I'm in an airport (durrrr), and I'm waiting for my sister, but there seems to be some sort of problem with the aeroplane and/or airport. I'm now trying to scrape my knowledge of French from the back of my brain to work out more. What I do know though is that I love the stylised black, white and red graphics [subbed by leah].

Some slight gore.. I would rate it PG-13, because I don't think kids would like to see someone chop off a head with an axe.. lol

It was a pretty cool game, but

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
why did the story deal with vampires? I just think it's weird how the janitor knows about the vampires, too... I just guessed answers based on my teaspoon-full of French knowledge, so I don't understand the whole story..

If someone could translate what was going on (in English), that would be great. :)

About the Red Buttons in Episode 4:

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)

A B C D
1 . . . .
2 . . . .
3 . . . .
4 . . . .

From the beginning of the puzzle, press:

B1
B2
B3
B4

and then in column B, if you see a red button, press the button to its right, and the same for column C.

So, for example, if B2 is red, then press C2.

Does that make sense? I remember that trick from playing MOTAS (the wall with the green buttons). xD

From what I can tell in the Spanish version, and I'm only up to the beginning of Episode 2... uh, may contain spoilers? This is the actual story, not the responses or the puzzle solutions.

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)

You go to the airpost to pick up your sister. You and she are from the UK, and you are vacationing in Spain. However, she came on a separate flight. Going into the airport, you are told at the information desk that there is a problem, and you have to leave the airport IMMEDIATELY. Obviously, intrepid adventurer/journalist/point-and-clicker you are, you instead decide to go looking for your sister yourself. Talking to the people working at the shops, they tell you that soldiers are in the airport and all the civilians have left. They tell you to talk to the concierge/janitor, as he will know more.

Moving on to passport control, you see a group of soldiers with big guns. They, too, tell you to leave. As you walk out of Passport Control, you spot the Janitor and go over to him. He starts to tell you about how something is wrong, and suddenly you both hear gunshots, banging, and screams. He tells you to follow him back to passport control...

All the soldiers are on the ground, dead. Blood splatters the room, and you see that many of them are horribly mutilated. The doors to move beyond passport control (ie, deeper into the airport to find your sister) are locked. After talking with the janitor, you grab a walkie-talkie and start moving through the vents. Yes, very spy-like of you, I am impressed.

You have a choice whether to go to the police or to go to the "medic center" to find your sister. Choose to go find your sister, and you will come to a vent through which you will see an office with keys on a desk. Moving on to another vent, you see a room with a doctor and a nurse. You learn that they are actually VAMPIRES IN DISGUISE, planning to take over the world. They are going to inject "medicine" into your sister and the other passengers on the flight to turn them into their vampiric slaves, while pretending to help them. Oh, dear! You, point-and-clicker extrordinaire, cannot let this happen.

Moving to the next vent, you see the "doctor" standing in front of four women, but you cannot see the women's faces. Over the walkie-talkie, the Janitor asks if one is your sister. The "doctor" calls a Kelley Hackett up, and she goes with the nurse into the next room. You see her face... it IS your sister!! Oh no!

"It is too late," the Janitor says... but your luck is good! The doctor needs to get more medicine because he is out. As he leaves the room, you think of how to save your sister. The Janitor suggests you rescue her, and you remind him of the dead policemen. Then, he asks if you saw anything in the other rooms... you are reminded of the stethoscope in the office. Crawling back to passport control and getting back out of the vents, you try the door into the office, but it is locked. Thinking quickly, you remember the keys in the office. How to get them?

While walking through the shops, one man tried to sell you a fishing pole. You go back to talk to the people at the shops. The janitor has informed them of the crisis, however the man in charge of the store with fishing poles is very unhelpful, and demands you pay him. You go back to the bank (another store), exchange your traveler's cheques for euros, buy the fishing pole, and climb back into the vent.

And that's all I've got so far. :)

I'm playing the French version, and kind of continuing Creation's post:

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)

You use the fishing pole to retrieve the keys from the first room you saw. Then you head back to the shops to get a disguise in order to go into the waiting room with the three girls. Go to the gift shop and pharmacy and get cologne and a white shirt, respectively.

Then go back to passport control and use your keys on the door there. Talk to the three girls and go into the other room. Tell the nurse she's needed elsewhere and talk to your sister. Watch the cutscenes.

In addition to Alina's continuation:

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
Before meeting the three girls, I think you may also need a hat (from the restaurant place) and the stethoscopes from the office you unlocked. You also get a clipboard in that same room.

So, all in all, your disguise consists of:
- a hat
- glasses (which you already have)
- a shirt
- a clipboard
- cologne that the gift shop lady sprayed

Just in case. :D
And thanks for the beginning storyline, Creation!

As far as I can tell from the french, it is the same as Creation's story, then

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
You must find a way to defeat the vampires and save the rest of the passengers. First you have to go find the other passengers. You climb into the ventilation shaft and follow the instructions. Observe the police office, two vampire policemen, and finally the departures lounge, where two policemen vampires are guarding the passengers. You notice that the vampires cannot see the departures-lounge computer. ..

Finished! Did it in French, on "good in French" setting (I was worried I was overestimating my abilities, but I guess I did okay). That was great practice; I've been trying to brush up on French lately, and this was great for my listening comprehension.

I loved some of the silly wrong responses. "J'aime manger le poisson." Awesome.

this game is definitely really good and funny. i played it in spanish on the "great" setting (i did good first, but i was curious - i think the only difference is that the text shows up for less time the better you are, otherwise everything is the same). a lot of the wrong answers are hilarious, and i actually thought the vampire thing was funny, too.

fun! I only wish that you could click through the "cut-scenes" (like the dialog between the waiters in episode 1) or the dialog balloons whenever you replay a conversation. I had maybe one or two specific questions or statements that I didn't quite catch the first time, and wanted to see them again a little quicker.

Story continuation:

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
Upon realizing that the vampiric soldiers can't see the arrival/departure board but that the passengers can, you and your janitor friend decide that the best course of action wouild be to hack the system and broadcast a message to the civilians. You make your way to the office where the computerized control system is by hopping on the luggage conveyor belt and tell the passengers that they should remain calm. You tell them that they should look closely at the soliders becaue they are vampires, and you also tell them not totake the medicine becuase it will transfrom them as well. You tell them that a smoke signal will be given, and when that occurs, they should grab provided arms and fight back for thier lives.

After this, you run around collecting all sorts of wooden implements (police batons, pool cues, tennic rackets and [my favorite] a prosthetic leg. You also obtain a lighter and some garlic to create the smoke signal and weaken the vampires. You place the arms in the ventillation unit behind the passenjers and light the garlic behind the soldiers. You then grab the arms and distribute them to the masses.

While the fight goes on, your oh-so-helpfull friend suggests that you quickly head to the control tower to re-establish communications while the vampy soldiers are distracted. You also decide that you should steal the luggage cart so as to outrun the stronger and faster vampires. A thrilling chase scene ensues in which you fight the vampires off your cart, and eventually you arrive at the tower.

You then play al ittle light game to get communications back up and running, and a large vampire sitting atop the tower realizes what has happened. He crashes through the window and tells you he respects your bravery and almost admires how far you've gotten with turning the civilians agaist his troops and reconnecting the communiation line. Despite this, he still asks, "But did you really think you could win against me?" and comes at you. In the following action sequence, you get smack arounda bit until you break the tip off of a strangely placed pole and help the head vampire impale himself upon it. You then mercilessly decapitate him with a nearby axe.

Control comes online and asks if you need anything. You say you're in dire need of help, and they say that they'll be there as soon as they can. They fly in some helicopters and clear up the rest of the mess.

Back in the airport, your janitor friend congratulates you and introduces you tothe head general. The general thanks and honors you, but he also says that you are never to speak of what happened at the airport. You tell him that's okay, and then you talk to the janitor about how strange it is that you're a journalist but you can't tell the greates story of your life. You then decided that you should just go relax and have fun on your vacation, and that's the end.

I apologize if I missed anything. I knew enough spanish to get along without repeating anything (I played on the good setting just to be safe), so if anybody needs help, I can probably help you out.

It's a bit buggy sometimes... the shopkeepers sometimes speak to me in English instead of French, and sometimes they make mistakes in French too. But it's a great game, and the graphics are fantastic.

Mikey

:
i don't think it's buggy. perhaps you chose that your french was not very good. thus, the game handicaps a bit and speaks to you in english. i never got a lick of english in my game when i played on french hard. and yes, the wrong answers are quite humorous.

Comment 38, Wednesday, May 2nd 2007 02:27:33 AM

Paolo

:
No, actually I chose the highest level of French too. If it uses English when something has to be said that goes beyond GCSE French, that makes sense, but there's no excuse for making grammatical errors in a game that is intended to help pupils revise for exams. There were at least half a dozen that I spotted (eg, "il a du" for "il a dû", and "Pouvez-vous m'entendre ?" instead of "M'entendez-vous ?") and they were all in the other players' dialogue, not the main players' responses (which had some deliberate errors in them designed to catch you out, such as "j'ai sorti" instead of "je suis sorti").

Anyway, apart from that, I thought the game was really well made and fun too.
