Just to let you know I've made a couple of minor site updates. Firstly I've now added a "Permalink" feature to the site comments (just click on the faint number in the top right of the comment). This lets you either link to a specific comment from another web-site, helps you move around the page (bit of an unforseen feature this one), and also allows you to hold your place on a comment thread if you are constantly refreshing comments, on a game for example, and want to see what's happened since you last viewed the page. Hopefully this feature will be useful - it came from a question Eva-Marie had, and I certainly think she'll find it useful.

Secondly I've updated the mobile web pages, the style has changed slightly, and look more like how you would see the pages on a mobile phone when viewed from a regular web browser. Also I've added an icon link from the regular pages to the mobile site.

That's it for now. I do however have a 'to do' list for the site, which may you be interested in, want to comment on, or have suggestions of your own. In no particular order the 'to do' list reads:

  • Create a custom 404 page.
  • Create a custom Database Error Page for when things go horribly wrong. Damn you MSAccess.
  • Consider moving database to MS SQL Server or MYSQL (both have size, and potential cost issues - MSAccess is at least free, at any size, with my web host).
  • Create a "blast from the past" feature, that puts an older post on the homepage periodically.
  • Add Articles, and article specific comment threads, to the mobile site.
  • Add a "Vote On This Post" feature, which will let me do a dynamically generated "Top Ten Games Hit Parade".
  • Most ambitious "to do" is to create a Lazylaces adventure game. I have a couple of storyline ideas, built up from all that gameplay I've linked to, but I don't know flash so the game will be a JavaScript/Image/HTML construction (thanks to DreamIsle for the chat which persuaded me I could do this).

hey Graeme. how about an automatic Error message whenever anyone tries to post "first!", informing them that due to circumstances beyond Lazylaces' control, the poster is irredeemably lame?

just a thought.

or maybe one that automatically posts something before someone posts "first!" so that their post turns out to be second and they look silly? or do you already have that feature?

and big ups to Dream Isle for talking Graeme into making a game! i can't wait! what will it be like? will the dreaded Tab key work? will it feature eensy-weensy rollovers? indecipherable passwords? will it be in Japanese? Hungarian? Tocharian? Ancient Etruscan? will there be lots of drinking in the game? does the Pope sh*t in the woods?

Hey Graeme, how about you come up with a system so that when Tafkam is overly critical of the majority of Lazylaces visitors, it wipes their hard-drive?

Or maybe you could have a crude and cynical post come up first so that Tafkam/Meme needn't bother. Just a thought.

Also, good luck with the Lazylaces game.

The Pope does that in the woods? *chin drops* who would have thought it lol

Great job on the updates Graeme, I am liking the blast from the past idea. Sometimes you forget just how good the old ones are.
Also , I am intruiged (sp) by the prospect of a Lazylaces game, what will we have to escape...if anything at all and is it inevitable it will contain the "first", "second" posters ;o)

lol, i love the idea of being able to wipe everyone's hard drive just by being critical of them. nice!

Hey, I think you should put a "Randomiser" on the site, which randomly selects 10 or so games so when your bored there's something to do!

I just needlessly used one of the new features.

Hey graeme,
ok first, i think the game idea is fantastic, because i'm sure with all of your gaming/reviewing experience that you've gathered i'm sure you'll bang out something great. plus you have lots of help (and criticism) if you need it ;P But also, Adobe is considering buying Flash (since they were unable to compete... but i don't see this as a microsoft-type move, personally, since they'll <i>improve</i> it) so that means it will become better and easier to use in the near future (hopefully). Just thought you'd like to know.
Second, maybe this will seem ironic, but when this turn into a <i>gaming</i> website?? I mean, if your blasts from the past are going to be chosen randomly, chances are they'll <i>not</i> be a game, even. let alone point and click. I sortof like having other things to read besides games that pile up over my head that I need to play...
third, I think you should add a comment-on-a-comment feature, with threads and all, so that you can reply to people's individual comments (you know how that whole thing works--- i have NO idea how hard that is to add to a site, though...)
fourth and finally, if you add a vote feature then wonderful "oldies" (what is actually <i>OLD</i> on the internet??) like Samorost might be left out!! :( (unless, ofcourse, it were to be a blast from the past....)

Ok thats all for now ;o)
Allegra (:
p.s. i don't know why i wrote this letter-style, but i did... :)

ho ho ho. you're not even in the running, my dear. check out the bottom of "Gomicon" if you want to see prolix verbiage.

me, i am STRONGLY in favour of anything that keeps Samorost (and Shift, and Walking in Circles) relatively visible. but i definitely agree with Allegra, these games keep piling up. and then so many of them are just DRECK, like that dismal "Escape the Spooky Stupid Joke Room." so maybe a rating system? no, probably not -- it would get misused like everything else, and people would vote two or three hundred times, or post just to slag perfectly good games that didn't have endings featuring nudity and free beer and be crudely critical of the majority of Lazylaces' users and generally act like louts.

that's IT! "Point-n-click Louts"! the g33k version of Soccer Hooligans! i see a front page expose in the Sun, with a three-column spread, photos of Graeme and some of us incorrigible posters, featuring plenty of cleavage and beer and a prominent link to Lazylaces.com and lots of snide back-biting commentary by envious site-owners from the Continent about "British manners" and "a nation of haxors"! Graeme on telly, in a vicuna coat and lizard-skin boots, explaining modestly that he just wanted to give people a chance to point and click, it's not HIS fault the site turned into something from a bad horror film, and then a call-in segment with a bunch of unwashed reprobates yelling "first!" at each other, and Cabinet ministers tut-tutting and "viewing with concern." site hits will SKYROCKET!

You know, if you're going to make a custom 404 page you should have a 404 song... anywho, I found one and I talked to the guy- if you want, you can use it for your 404 page...

And it's on the Newgrounds Audio Portal, so it's public domain anyways.

So here it is: Khuskan's 404 song.

Hope ya like it Graeme :D

G, if you start writing a game i guarantee it will take over your life and make you quite mad at times. however, if it is finished, you will be a happy bunny (note i said IF). personally, i am notorious for starting exciting projects, wasting a lot of time, then never finishing them.

what will the game be i wonder? will the user play the part of a tiny sweat molecule, trying to escape graemes pongy left shoe? will the lazy shoelaces impede your escape?
