Superballs - Sony Bravia Ad
Somebody, anybody, send me some point and click games, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms... Anyway as we all shiver with the cold sweats staring blankly into space pining for our fix, we can watch the cool bouncy coloured balls in the Sony Bravia Ad, which has some nice music too. Anyway over to Think~Pink who sent the link in:

You must have seen the ad for the Sony Bravia TV...the one with the bouncy balls in San Francisco. Well, if you haven't, (or if you just can't get enough of it like me), here is a link so you can watch it over and over. I first saw this ad at the movies, and since, have seen it as a scaled down version, on TV. It is quite special. 250,000 superballs let loose down one of San Franciscos famous streets, it really is a mass of bright colour. Set to Jose Gonzalez' enchanting "Heartbeats" song, you can't help but be transfixed by the whole thing... I like it that much.

Anyway, this link will take you to the complete extended version, (the way it should be viewed), but you can go to the home page for other versions. Enjoy :o)

You can't click it though can you? And where's the wastepaper basket? [subbed by Think~Pink]

And as I pause to take a saner approach and actually READ the post, I realize that I've actually seen pictures of this before it was put together and aired. Saw it on a livejournal glamourbombing community- though now as I see the ad itself, it's simply delightful in so many different wonderful ways.

I'm so glad you posted this Graeme, it's just another excuse for me to to watch in awe and wonderment.
What a great start to a miserable Friday morning, I can now make my way into work with a smile on my face...thank you :o)

You know what - this add is stupid. It has No script whatsoever, no bright idea, no nothing. I heard about it before, just as you, and I thought that they were going to do something extraordinary with those falling balls. well, they didnt. Its just falling balls. nothing happens. really.

I see the ceo's in the conference room:
- we have completely no idea how to advertise our shit, I know!, lest just release like 10 000 balls on the street, people will dig on this "wooooaaahhh, ballllsssss, lots of baaallllllllssssss".

its just stupid.

Yes! I love this; but I'd like to let people know that the song 'Heartbeats' is actually by the Knife, the Juan gonzalez acoustic version featured here is a cover.
The advert always wants to make me listen to original.

Murtaugh i think u forget to have ur morning coffee, it will be OK.

As for me, i loved it, it was sucha different but delightful approach to advertising. Sometimes something simple, makes a big statement.

Think~Pink, **I** still love you.

and i agree with you AND Murtagh (though i don't necessarily share either of your perceptions/perspectives) -- the ad is beautiful AND meaningless. in short, absurd. it would be Dadaesque if it didn't have that soundtrack.

though (pace Murtagh) i can see how the honchos at Sony thought it was product-relevant -- it IS about "colour". sort of. but it has at least as much to do with a copier as shots of mossy rocks have to do with the Lexus Infiniti.

oh oops, it's about a TV. which sort of illustrates Murtagh's point, doesn't it?

its advertising how rich and colourful this bravia tv is, just imagine seeing this ad on a bravia. i watched it on my black onyx screen and it looks amazing when compared to a normal tv. so this ad is perfect to portray how amazingly rich and colourful this telly is, go to your local sonystore and check it on out on a bravia for real.

:
The whole point of this advert (essentially) is to draw attention to the company and thus to the product...it is merely a case of Levi's Syndrome....ie, 'Look we have this somewhat meaningless advert but isn't it good along with the music?' (for this read 'Nanny In Manhattan', 'Flat Beat', 'Spaceman')

Regardless of the cynical motives behind it...it is a beautiful piece of film-work and I praise the day it graced my television...

(even though my Dockney fiancee flinched when she saw the frog)

I think it's awesome, how many of you can honestly say you've never wanted to drop a quarter of a million bouncy balls from the top of a hill just to watch them bounce away into oblivion? Forget about the advertising, I'd want to see it just to see it.

Miaowmix, thank you for that information. I had never heard the song before I discovered this advert, and I completely fell in love with the song. I will definitely check out the original :o)

Xmzdimplzx, "Sometimes something simple, makes a big statement"
- Exactly! That is what makes this ad so special. An extremely simple concept, with a huge impact.
I love the simplicity of it and it's probably one of the main reasons I find it so fascinating and watch it time and time again.

Meme - Right back at you ;o)

Webby, thanks for the link.
Although I have looked at all of the gallery pics on the Sony site about the making of the ad, it is great to get another perspective on it from a resident. I would have skipped work too ;o)

*still can't get enough of it ;o)*

Anyhow, I love this advert.

The music's lovely, and even though I usually hate calm, quiet music, I just fell in love with this. Must find it on mycokemusic.
