I've been thinking about creating a lazylaces forum, something that would have a general forum to let people chat in, and maybe threads for some of the more popular games (where I believe the site comments get a bit unwieldy). What do you think? The site comments would still exist (in their current format), I'm hoping a forum would complement these and rather than replace them. The forum would require registration (I have enough trouble with spam on the comments), but I don't think anyone would have a problem with this, would you?

Anyway if you want to check out the sort of thing I'm thinking of look at snitz which is the free forum code I'm thinking of using (I really don't have time to do all that coding myself), and if you'd like to express you opinion add a comment on this post, or better still try the first lazylaces poll:

obviously, the only function a forum would serve would be to increase the number of sites on which people could post inanities like "first!" without even bothering to read the thread description. oh, and then the rest of us could argue about whether it was stupider to post "first!" or to call such posters n00bs, dweebs, and (to paraphrase my grate freind Molesworth) swots, sneaks, cads, prigs and various other chizzes.

in short, i'm all for it!

Well Graeme, personally I like the Lazylace setup as it is now, because the page layout is "quiet" to the eye and each comment takes up only a small part of the full page. It is easy to read successive comments.

In the Snitz type forums, you tend to see only about three or four comments at the time. Each post takes up a lot of space especially if a lot of member info is included (cf Nordinho). Imagine to have to scroll 3 pages down just to get past the 1st, 2nd...10th posts each thread starts with!

It gets even worse if you also use separate pages (like Nordinho) requiring a mouse click to advance, but Snitz seems to keep it all on one page from the testpages I have seen.

However, you mentioned you will also keep comment pages in the current format, so if other people like to have separate forums in addition, that's fine with me.

hi, I'm not a regular 'commenter' but a very regular visitor to this site, which I think is superb as it is. I agree with Helanren. I used to be a Nordinho fan but since he changed to the new format and added all the features, modorators, member signatures that take up the whole screen etc. I find it all too much for me... It looks great but is just too busy and 'frightening'. I really wouldn't like to see Lovely Lazylaces go the same way.

Thanks Grayham :D

Just to be clear, the site would stay as it is - the forum would be seperate and used to post general comments and for "special" games.

okay, THAT'S the way to increase user interest -- say things like " 'special' games," wink wink nudge nudge.

I'm a long-time lurker, and probably have only commented twice, but I visit the site daily and keep up on the latest musings (Triskabiblios, anyone? ;) ). I like the comments as they are - much more concise and easier to follow, no extraneous info (avatar, # of posts, etc). The focus is on the individual topic. Plus, its a LOT easier to keep up with than a forum would be. Each topic has ONE thread, as opposed to a huge selection. (And, I suspect, less drama would come up if we just had comments section...most forums that I've seen have tended to get snippy and dramatic). Just my two cents. :) And, just to poke some fun... I'm thirteenth!! (I think). ;)

Also - I would regret to see a strict "hierarchy" at lazylaces. Graeme is the owner, and we all love him for it. But start getting moderators, and people will whine and get angry when their posts are edited or flamed, or too much "authority" is coming from a community we used to feel at home in. I predict, anyway.

I'm in two minds about this. A forum would make walkthrough/spoiler/hint discussion a lot easier. On the other hand, like some of the other commenters, I'd absolutely dread the forums turning into something like Nordinho, and let's face it, there's some risk of that. The whole "first" and chatspeak business is usually an indicator for the sort of posters who have enormous signature pictures, elaborate avatars, make posts with two billion smileys, tlk lyk dey nvr went 2 skool LOLZ ^^ and so on and so forth... and that would completely defeat the biggest advantage forums have, easier discussion of games.

Forums are a good way to keep up to date with the games, (many of them get pushed to later pages and therefore forgotten), and registering is a good way to go, especially on your part Graeme, it will help keep the spam to a minimum, but I really don't mind LL as it is.

I do think that there is a danger of one overshadowing the other, and people missing out on information about games, (and maybe being forced to register with forums even if they don't really want to), to get it.
I can't see there would be much point having 2 separate areas. I think it will just divide the community you have worked so hard to build up.

Having said this, I would register if you did incorporate them and visit them regularly, as I like LL too much to give up, (besides...I'm very nosey :oP)

The only gripes I have with the set up as it is, are inane spam, uneccessary language, spoilers not being hidden, (but these are down to us, the users), and the fact that still active games are pushed further and further down the list of pages, as you add new stuff.
Forums might cure all of that, but I don't know if the pros would outweigh the cons.

I like the comments as they are, but I am a fan of forums too, so I really don't mind if you use them or not...it won't stop me visiting. I know I'm not much help :o(

Incidentally, on most forums, including those at Nordinho, you can alter your settings so you don't have to view avatars, signatures etc, thus giving you just the information you need, and want, to see :o)

I liked Kat's point about the forums providing a good way to keep up with walkthroughs and whatnot. But, couldn't we get things like that at places like Nordinho and such instead? Maybe not, because some games are introduced here...but I would think that the network between lazylaces and some of the other forums would eventually result in a trickling of sorts. Oh well. She made a good point, though :)

I do rather like the lazylaces in the blog style, but am not totally opposed to a forum. It is rather unweildy to go back and find old games in the current set up. As long as it doesnt devolve into l334 speak and n00bs roxxors hey let's set up an IRC room :)

personally, i would love to hear more from Graeme -- one of the things i miss about "the old days" (i.e. last year) was Graeme's hints, that was where i learned to appreciate the value of a tactful hint. i don't know if forums would make that more possible, but i suspect it might make it less likely, since Graeme would be busier. (is that even POSSIBLE?0

on an unrelated note, if someone takes offense at the fact that i think it's ineffably inane to post "first!" without commenting on the actual topic of the thread, i can see two options: stop posting inane posts, or ignore my opinion since you obviously disagree with me. but of course, if you're enjoying being offended, then go for it.

on yet another unrelated note, this time when i visit the site, there's actually some COPY above the "vote" buttons -- this morning it was blank.

but the copy stops short with the line "Anyway if you want to check out the sort of thing I'm thinking of look" -- UNTIL i highlight the space under it, then the rest appears (even after i stop highlighting -- i.e., black text magically appears).

and then disappears again, in random spots. i assume this is because of the "vote" buttons, but if that's the way the proposed forum is going to work, it's not going to work very well.

unless this is just happening because i use the despised IE. in which case, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

I have to agree with the majority posts. I love this site, I hate the idea of forums. this is a daily checked site for me. The first after the news. I only go to the other sites like nitro 59 or nordinho after, but what always keeps me here is the setting. Its like a home site for a lot of us who have been following you through the last few years. We love that we recognize one another and the set up works more than fine. Please don't change it like nordinho. Its one of the reasons, grant you far down on the list, but never the less one of the reasons I love your site more.

Hmm. I do like the idea of a forum [and the "nudge, nudge, wink wink" special games, although I don't think that's what you meant, a clean living young man like you ;-)] but I think you'd find that folks would have to check both comments and forum threads and there'd be an awful lot of duplication.

My pet mantra is "If it ain't broke don't fix it" but I'd vote for give it a go and see how it works.
