Spy Academy
The new series of Spooks (one of my favourite Television shows) is now airing on the BBC, which means there's a new version of Spy Academy on-line. Anyway, remarkably I haven't mentioned it so far (as I have in the past), and I hadn't even played Spy Academy until Allegra stumbled accross it and dropped me a note. I'll hand over to her for the description as she does it quite well:

A very very well made, nice-looking game about a British spy show I've never seen (being American myself).

The basic gist is that you've enrolled in Spy Academy and are training to become an M15 agent. Wait, this is not as corny as it sounds! You have to go through basic training first, which consists of a series of 10 minigame-type-things, each one measuring some meter of logic, speed, or reaction (they're called the SLR tests, I believe...).

Once you've completed those, you can move on to the real missions. So far I've only done one real mission because I can't figure out why the spy man won't let me play more of them....

The game is styled nicely, with some tough little mini games in there, and even comes with a "screen saver" if you sit there long enough!! (Don't ask how I found that one out...)

Oh and I almost forgot to mention, the game comes with a very nice little host video, a man, I forget his name, who leads you through the process.

Also:: You do have to register if you want to save your data, which I highly recommend and only takes like 2 seconds to complete, and as an added bonus when you've finished registering they bring you right back to the game, which is nice and not done by enough sites now a days.

All I have to add is that the host is Harry, as any fan will tell you, and that if you haven't seen the show I encourage you to try it as soon as possible. The current series of Spooks is currently airing in the UK on Thurday nights on the BBC, and can be seen in the US, re-titled as MI-5, on A&E. In the meantime Spy Academy is a great game that will keep you occupied for a while.

Is this the same game as you get to play if you press the Red Button on your Sky Remote at the end of the show, when that Spooks Training thing comes up in the corner? Because I tried that once and failed badly. Harry kept shouting at me.

If you pick the access mode as 'Story' before you start:

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
Once you finish a 'real' mission you need to refresh the page to get access to the next one. Gives the effect of time passing you see. Or it could be lazy programing. Who knows?

Is Infiltration the last stage? Because I've refreshed a couple times and nothing more is happening. Very fun, though! I was terrible at the SLR bomb defusal and car-intercepting. The rest was more fun for me.

Thanks for the great game Graeme - though I do think that some of these 'longer' games should have a warning with them. Something along the lines of "WARNING - Your reputation as a Domestic Goddess, may suffer as the result of your spending TOO MUCH TIME on this game!", lol - yep, you guessed it... been playing this game most of the day and NOTHING has been done in our household.... well nearly nothing - I managed to find the time to dress the kids and feed them, lol.

Kitty - you have to go through all the training missions in the folder marked Spy Academy first... then you're given some small assignments which you can access under either Assignments, or manuals... then you get to go 'in the field', marked 'Infiltration' which is where I am now. Some of the training ones are bloody difficult. I can't for the life of me finish the gas one, with tthe little scarab-looking robot. It may be my slow dial-up connection, but I can get to the first 3 gates no problem, just can't get to the 4th one in time.

I was stoked to score 99% in the Sniper test, but expect I may have had an advantage, 'cause the guy looked suspiciously like my cheating-scum of an ex-husband! lol. I always did like the idea of getting him centred in some cross-hairs.... aaahhhh my dream came true! :)

Crazy Bunny - re the Patch assignment - bloody difficult, but I got there in the end. When moving to the right place you can hold your direction key down instead of tapping it, but other than that it's just a matter of perseverance and hoping you get an easy board. The Garbology one seems to be more guess work than anything else. Descramble reminded me of the old board game Mastermind, but I really enjoyed the Descramble one. Hmmm.... am thinking I really have spent too much time on this game.

The gas mission is misleading because...

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
you do NOT close the gates in the order of the numbers. I did it gate 1, 4,3, 2 and that worked with time to spare.
Also I think the map is the same every time, so learn from your mistakes.

The garbology one is quite logical, I think - for example,
SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
matches = smoker, yoghurt=healthy diet, posh-looking newspaper=higher income, guitar pick= lower income, paint brush=younger person, lower income, bacon=poor health, football socks=younger person, probably male.
Yes, you're making a whole heap of sterotyped assumptions, but hey, don't we all do that in everyday life anyway? :)

The lock picking and patch ones frustrated me but I finally managed them - the real puzzler for me is the surveillance one, with the six camera feeds from an underground station. No matter what I click or do, I just cannot get any of the six cameras to show their footage. SO annoying. Am I just being impatient? I've waited a few minutes after clicking on them...

Cheers! K

Hey guys....i was just wondering for the garbology how do u choose other options? Can you just guess their age and stuff or are their other menus for you to choose things like hair colour and that sort of thing?

Comment 40, Thursday, October 6th 2005 03:53:00 AM

K

:
"Me", there are fifteen or so variables on the garbology page - surely that's enough! You can't do hair colour or anything like that - it's just the age, gender, income, education level, health, diet, height etc... but if you guess specifically enough, you get get 100%. My closest score is about 93% - see my post above for my tips.

Kgw

:

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
For the video portion of Infiltration, just make sure you record your 3 second loop while not having the agent in the video. Once you've made 3 looping videos, do the playbacks when you see the agent isn't in the video so the surveillance doesn't spot the loop.

I've completed Infiltration now and I cannot get any other mission to come up. The scores have room for Assignment 10, but I can't get 10 to come up anywhere. Any ideas?
