Blog Flux
As a little experiment I've signed up to Blog Flux. The reason? Well their MapStats feature looks like it might be quite interesting. It tracks visitors locations and plots them on a "Google Maps" map of the world, so not only can I see who is using the site but where they are in the world as well. I've tracked site usage on LL from nearly the begining of the site, but I really like the tie-in with Google Maps on this - it makes the experience very visual and interactive. Since I've started to notice site visitors from more and more unusual places, I'm hoping the map should make interesting viewing. Anyway we'll see how it goes. I'm going to leave the tracker on this post for now as an experiment - if I like it, it'll become a permenent site feature.

PS. While I'm on a techie note I thought I'd mention that I've finally fixed the problem with my space bar - thanks to Tara for pointing out the obvious to me. Take the key off and blow under it. Fixed the problem instantly! If only I'd done that earlier...

Update: I'm really liking the mapstats - they're now a permenent feature! The link is at the bottom of every page.

It looks like the times are for central america - is there any way to change how it is displayed?

I think the stats are meant to update every 2 mins - but it seems to happen quicker.

I'm guessing some locations can't be resolved so won't show.

I don't think you can show the time from a diff time zone.

And finally there's a <a href="http://mapstats.blogflux.com/3832-cities.html">last 100 view</a> which is pretty cool.

I couldn't find myself, the closest location is hundreds of kilometres away. Why? I did wait for more than two minutes, and it added several new locations, only not mine.
Hmmm

I wonder - does it record where your ISP loacation is instead of exactly where you are? I think I found my stats but they are in Boulder, Colorado (where my ISP is located) and they are keeping up exact time with me.
If it is me, I am the only person in Colorado.
Lonely out here on the plains...

Very cool.

hard to decide which is cuter, the fact that you're looking at yourself, or the fact that you're looking at a bunch of other geeks who love Lazylaces, or the cool names of some of the locations (seriously, who would call a town "Dagenham, Barking and Dagenham"? and there's a location north-west of Leeds just called "United Kingdom"), or the fact that you can zoom in on a satellite photo of your location.
"i can see my house from here! look everybody, there's my house!"
(of course, the closer you get the less accurate it is, unless the suggestion above is correct and it's about the location of the ISP. still, why would my ISP be in an empty field ten miles east of town and a mile south of a dirt road?)
ooh, and a couple of fields have the word "Google" over-printed on them! is this an advertising campaign, visible from space?

i'm thinking the one in franklin park might be me, but that's a ways away from where i actually am... interesting (i guess it's that ISP dealie). and somehow i thought more people from my area checked this out. hunh. (unless it's only counting the ISP once for multiple visitors..?)

that's so neat! it will be especially interesting to check at the early hours of the morning (as im so often here at 3am shaking my fist at the latest p&c) to see people in far-away places on at the same time. i hope it will be a solid feature.

I'm from Blog Flux, just hear to shed some light :)

The cities list is all real time, as is the RSS and JS feed. The actual stat numbers (unique visitors, referrals, etc, are generated every 2 minutes).

We do our best to match where you are. Sometimes we are off a bit, and sometimes the longitude and latitude coordinates are not perfect. Many times ISPs allocate certain IP ranges to certain cities, so it is not necessarily where your ISP is :)

thanks Ahmed! nice to know that SWAT teams activated to track down particular users (or laser-guided missiles programmed to land on top of them) will miss my house by a comfortable margin, at least if they use this technology!

Just a thought...when you click on blogflux, it takes you out of the Lazylaces site. Would it still pick you up now that you're off the site? (Kind of like If a tree falls in the forest and no one's there, does it still make a sound?)

:
Okay, found an easy way to check if it's you. Because it picks up your screen resolution, check your settings, then change them and look for a new computer from your part of the world (in the top 100) and check the resolution. It should have picked up your new setting.

What a neat site! Good to see we have most of the Canadian provinces covered! *waving hello to everyone around the globe!*

Just wanted to remind that MapStats only works on pages the JS is on - so once this post is off the main page, it won't track it anymore.
