Quaint Room
Proper old skool point'n'click - trapped in a room, combine the objects you collect to find a way to escape, there's a clue in the wastepaper basket....all it needs is an Apple Mac on a desk and Quaint Room would have every essential point'n'click ingredient. The only bad thing is it's a tad too easy - although I've included a couple of visual clues (above) if you are having trouble [subbed by tafkam, jackie & lynn].

UPDATE: I should have mentioned before that this is the follow up to Swan's Room if you are thinking it looks familiar.

Ahh.. better get my translater out for this one XD

The graphics in quaint room look farmiliar, and they are very vigilant. And heh, all the originals. Clue in the wastepaper basket, the game has "room" in its name. Im waiting for a brand new point and click that differs from all of this stuff.

*SPOILER*

The light will flicker (annoyingly!) and on the black tar thingy that you got from the pipe, it will show you a pattern. Use that pattern to get yourself out.

P.S.The pattern changes each time you play

I saw this on Nordinho and was quite eager to play, as I quite enjoyed 'Swans Room'.
It was much shorter I think, but I still thought it was okay, although it did seem a little buggy trying to combine items.
This aside, it was a nice way to while away another 5 mins of work time...or so :o)

SPOILER:

get white blocks first.

1. under pillow
2. in waste basket
3. under table
4. in corner of the room by the miniature black table.
5. under the white box which is on the miniature black table.
6. beside the plate on the shelf.
7. in the vase (click on the lid of the vase to get it).
8. in the white cupboard below the shelf.

then go back to the coffee table and get the pipe and matches.
then go back the white cupboard below the shelves to obtain the scroll.

then go the frame which contains the candle. remove the frame by clicking on it bottom right. then get the candle.

then go back to where the miniature black table is, click on the scroll then click onto the shadow of the scroll on the wall tp put it up there.

now light the candle by clicking on it, then click on the box on the right with the writing in it. click on the matches now and then click on the the top of the candle to light it.

now in the sameway click on the pipe to get the big image of it up. now click on the part where you put the tobacco in to get some tar out of it.

now get the big image of the tar up and click on it till it transforms to the shape of a H.

now with the tar highlighted click on the scroll till a black square comes up on it.

view back till you see the miniature black table again. click on the white box, so it goes up. then click on the lit candle and click just below the white box to put the candle on the table. now click on the white box to put it down over it.

now wait until the light flickers to see the patten the candle does on the scroll. this is the key.

now go on over to the door and the white blocks highlighted arrange it to the same pattern as seen on the scroll. the door should unlock now.

Ta-Da you're done.

MINIMAL HINTS / INSTRUCTIONS:

(to begin with, i feel sure that “quaint” should be translated more as “old-fashioned” lol.)
open the page and click on the right-hand box to begin the game. scroll through the dialogue boxes. pick up the things on the table: a pipe and a box of matches (which you can open).

the only really difficult thing about this game is the mechanics: every time you click on something in your inventory, a dialogue box opens. so you have to click twice, to use anything.

you find seven white pieces of wood, and a place where they fit.
see the picture of a candle, on the wall? turns out it’s NOT a picture: it’s a framed piece of glass in front of a candle.
to light the candle: click on it, to outline the item in blue; then click on the characters on the right, to bring the item up as a larger picture; then click on the matches ONCE, and then click on the candle twice (to get rid of the dialogue box).
to put the candle somewhere: find a place to put it, click on the candle once, click on where you want to put it.

what to do with the tube: it’s a scroll. to unroll and hang it: click on it once, click on the characters so it’s large, click on it twice so it unrolls, put it back in your inventory (it’ll look like it’s back in the tube), then decide where you want to put it, make sure it’s outlined in blue, and click on where you want it.

the most aggravating part of this game, even worse than the flickering light with the sound effects and the obnoxious dialogue boxes (which probably aren’t nearly as obnoxious if you can read Japanese lol) is the sheet of paper on the table, which turns into a diagram of the box on the table in the altar space whenever you click on it. this serves NO PURPOSE AT ALL IN THIS GAME.

now you just need to use what you have:
with the pipe, find something in it.
with that, double-click on it so it changes shape.
then put that somewhere.
now the pay-off: you’re almost done. so don’t read the next spoilers until you’ve tried everything you can think of.

SPOILER:
first hint: the flickering light is a vital part of this game.
second hint: there’s a reason you had to get the black ash out of the pipe and put it somewhere.
and you’re done!

Um, I kind of cheated without realising it.
I got all the white blocks - all 8 of them
then found I could put the blocks into the 3x3 grid.

So I thought maybe I would put them all in around the edge.
So I put them in, but the last 2 woudnt fit anywhere.

Then I tried the door and walked out.

I had to restart the game, so I could do the other stuff, to find the correct pattern.

It might have been a glitch, but it seems you can only put them in the right places, and not the wrong ones...

cba to test the theory tho.. will leave that with you..

Tia

:
Hold on, what?...I got 9 white blocks (all I needed was 6), how come everyone got only 8? There was probably a glitch..and I must admit I didnt find it THAT easy. I got frustrated trying to combine the candle and the match and it turned out I didnt even need the bloody thing!

I think the paper thing DID have a purpose, everytime you picked it up it made that happy sound...made you feel like you've found something special, when in fact you hadn't oh well.

Personally, I prefered swans room, it didnt have the annoying flickering light!

Game was wayy too easy, I mean I must have beat it in one minute flat :P. All I did was put the blocks into the door and open it... not sure what purpose the other items served. O well, as long as it kills time, that's all that matters, right?

Comment 49, Tuesday, September 13th 2005 11:21:00 PM

Tafkam

:
well, the PATTERN of blocks is what determines whether or not the door opens, unless you've got a glitch. and the pattern changes every time you play. so it sounds like you lucked out.
